Christopher Columbus played an important role in the development of the ‘New World’ that we know today. He was credited with the discovery of America we know today. He sailed to America with his three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Columbus came with slaves on his ships that he forced to come on the voyage with him. Evenmore, he stole the land that he ‘discovered’ from natives that stayed there before Columbus came. He stole the land from the Indians and Vikings that lived there before they settled in America. The main question that is being asked is whether Columbus is a hero or a villain. Born in 1451, he was raised in the water. He was the oldest child in a family of five. Columbus had a formal education, and he soon after started sailing the world. He went on many voyages with more skilled sailors to learn the way. He grew up a very well behaved boy, and you would not expect him to be the type of person he was when he got older. He went on a voyage in 1476, and it did not end well for the ship or the sailors. The ship wrecked near the southwest point of Portugal. He swam to the coast of Portugal where he began his new life. His brother Bartolomeo already lived in Lisbon, so he started working with him making maps. Columbus took many of his own trips to different countries that were already discovered before he decided to go and find somewhere new. Columbus knew he needed the support of royals to make the voyage to cross the Atlantic, but he was denied from the year 1484 until he finally gained support in 1492. He moved into the native Americans land, the tribe of Taino people. Upon their arrival there is said to have been hundreds of thousands up to a million Taino people living on the island. They traded jewelry, animals, and food with the people from Columbus’s exploration. After their cordial meeting, Columbus forced the Taino people into slavery. If they made any small mistake they would be brutally punished. Some of the slaves were killed by disease, but more were killed by the overworking, or at the hands of the Columbus men. Twenty-five years after Columbus’s arrival most of the Taino people were dead. Public executions, flogging, and even rape of the Taino women shows the brutality these people went through. It was not just the women that were tortured, the men were also assaulted and often killed for the smallest wrong
