Christopher Columbus is one of the most famous sailor that has crossed history books. He is a master navigator that opened the way for European Exploration. He is an Italian explorer who is known for sailing for Spain and discovering the Americas and colonizing them. One controversial question for historians is why the King and Queen of Spain would sponsor and fund an Italian explorer instead of a Spanish explorer. This is because Columbus is determined. Spain was made up of small ruling kingdoms that were attempting to drive out the Moors, before 1492. When King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile united in marriage, their two kingdoms came together making Spain a strong and powerful country. Columbus wanted gold, gems, land, and titles for himself and the nation of Spain, which was some of the same interests of the king. Because of this Columbus got the chance to sail to Asia. The idea of being able to trade with the West Indies by sailing westward was very intriguing. This new passage would be a lot safer and less treacherous than the old. With the old passage, the silk road, becoming dangerous after the fall of the Mongolian empire, the two monarchies liked the proposal of the westward passage to Asia. If Columbus found a way to Asia, then Spain could trade with them without having to go through brawls with other countries and fighting through trade traffic, which was a risk.
