Christopher Columbus was born in October 31, 1451 in Republic of Genoa, Italy and died May 20, 1501. He was an explorer and navigator. Columbus’ first voyage was in the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. He first voyage to sea as teenager. During his first voyage he was attacked by French privateers off the coast of Portugal. His ship was burned and he had to swim to the Portuguese shore and make his way to Lisbon, Portugal. During those years Columbus was in Portugal, Columbus married and settled with Felipa Perestrello. Felipe and Columbus had one son together, Diego in 1480. Felipe soon died after they married and Columbus moved to Spain. Columbus and his men soon went on with their journey and they stopped at Cuba and Hispaniola which is what we now call Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In September 1493 Columbus returned to the Americas, when he returned he found that the Hispaniola settlement was completely destroyed. No One knows what happened. Columbus left his brothers behind so they could rebuild the settlement while he headed west. Conditions in Hispaniola were so bad that the Spanish Authorities Had to send a new governor to take over. After they sent the new Governor they arrested Columbus and made him return to Hispaniola but the charges were dropped. In 1502, Columbus persuaded the Spanish King to finance a trip across the Atlantic, little did Columbus know it was his ;last voyage. Columbus made it all the way to Panama he was just miles away from the Pacific Ocean but he had to abandon two of his four ships during an attack with natives.
