Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.
Christopher Columbus was an explorer and navigator born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. When Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Spain in 1492, he hoped to reach eastern Asia. He thought he had reached Asia when he landed on an island in the Caribbean Sea. In fact he had opened up to Europeans a new world with two continents—North America and South America—and many islands.
Columbus achieved such a discovery by going on his 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th voyages. On the first voyage, Christopher Columbus discovered six islands, all which he named after kings and queens that he had the utmost respect for. The six he islands he unearthed were: San Salvador, Isla de Santa Maria de Concepcion, Fernandina, Isabella, Isla Juana, Espanola. Today, these islands are in: the Bahamas (San Salvador), Chile (Santa Maria Island), Ecuador (Fernandina Island), Ecuador (Isabella), Cuba (Isla Juana), and Ecuador (Espanola). In his first letter, Columbus describes these islands as very fertile, filled with green trees, flowers, birds, fruit, honey, and an immeasurable amount of people.

But what we don’t know, is what Columbus thought when he arrived in the North America or what he though of the Native Americans he met. In fact, we don’t know much about all the explorers after Columbus and what they thought. Each explore had their own view of the Native Americans, and three great examples are Columbus, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda and Bartolomé de Las Casas
It is know that Christopher Columbus is the one who discovered America first, but surprisingly he is not. There were more people to discover America before him. So why does Christopher take all the credit for discovering America? Columbus takes all the credit because he was the one who opened America to Europe, and he broke the barrier for people to conquer the western side of the world. Besides he also brought disease to America and 90 percent to the population were ill.
“The True Importance of Christopher Columbus” can be an eye opener. It presents facts that allow people without much knowledge of Columbus or early exploration and colonization to understand what really happened on these voyages to the new world. Terrible things happened during America’s transition from Europe’s newly discovered land to the thirteen colonies. The section of “The True Importance of Christopher Columbus” that is most prominent to me was the lies and half truths within textbooks.
