Method The study included participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. NHANES III used a highly stratified multistage probability sampling and employed oversampling of the older people, non-Hispanic blacks and Mexican Americans. Introduction Smoking is a major public health problem and a major cause of many diseases and premature deaths. All over the world, smoking tobacco is one of the main causes of preventable death, yet tobacco use is still extremely common. In the 20th Century, the tobacco epidemic killed 100 million people worldwide. During the 21st century, it could kill one billion. “By 2015, tobacco is projected to be responsible for 10% of all deaths worldwide and is projected to kill 50% more people than HIV/AIDS.”
Many reports have been issued based on the evidence regarding the devastating health affecs of smoking and the expose of second hand smoke. Unfortunatly, cigarette smoking has reportedly caused about 480,000 deaths anually in the United States with an account of 41,000 deaths due to second hand smoking. It is indicated that America has the greatest heath issues from smoking. Neverless, it has been declining due to the rise on taxes and the promotions to cut down tabacco use advetisement. Smoking can be very addictive but there are many ways to help stop that I’ll get to soon.
Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. 480,000 deaths each year, nearly one in every 5 deaths. Most people know that smoking is terrible for you, but they still do it. Tobacco kills more than 7 million people each year. More than 6 million of those are deaths by the result of direct tobacco use while 890,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to secondhand smoke.
According to Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (2016) there are 0.2% of primary school students and 2.7% of secondary school students who smoke. This show that there are alarming numbers of smokers among young people and this problem should not be ignored as these young smokers have the influence among teenagers leading to an increase in the number of young smokers. The ban of selling cigarettes can reduce the number of young smokers even more which leads to a small or even zero smoking population in the future. In recent decade, Hong Kong has face a serious problem in population aging, this problem will worsen if the next generation has a large population are smokers or die from smoking. Fewer people have to provide for a large amount of old people.
