Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. 480,000 deaths each year, nearly one in every 5 deaths. Most people know that smoking is terrible for you, but they still do it. Tobacco kills more than 7 million people each year. More than 6 million of those are deaths by the result of direct tobacco use while 890,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to secondhand smoke. Around 80% of the worlds 1.1 billion smokers live in low and middle-income countries. They do not think about the environment they are damaging. Pollution caused by smoking does not only damage the air or body but to some extents pollute the land and water. Millions of cigarette butts are left on the ground every day, most of them ending up in lakes and rivers. The remaining butts take 20-25 years to decompose. Smoking does not only affect your health but others around your health. “Secondhand smoke is a serious health hazard causing more than 41,000 deaths per year. It can cause or make worse a wide range of damaging health effects in children and adults, including lung cancer, respiratory infections, and asthma.” (American Lung Association, pg.1) What is secondhand smoke? Well, to begin with, it contains hundreds of chemicals known to be toxic, including formaldehyde, benzene, vinyl chloride, arsenic, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide. Secondhand smoke kills around 7,330 deaths from lung cancer and 39,950 deaths from heart disease each year.
