PURPOSE
The purpose of this experiment is to visualize circular motion and its properties
BACKGROUND
Centripetal force is necessary to make an object move in a circle
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials used in the experiment were as follows: A Mechanical Pen Stop Watch A Black Marker Eye Protection Thin String Scissors Five Metal Washers

A mechanical pen was disassembled and just the tube was kept. A string was strung through the …show more content…

6 inches of string was pulled out on either side of the pen and we marked the string at the base of the pen with the black marker. Then the pen casing was spun and the timer was started and it was timed how long it took for the 1 washer to make 15 rotations. Then that was repeated 5 times. Then 2 more washers were tied onto the side with 2 washer already for a total of 4. The experiment was repeated 5 times once more. Finally, the one washer was spun and while it was spinning the bottom 4 washers were cut off all at once.
RESULTS
The first time the pen was spun with 2 washers, it had an average of 7.4 seconds to make 15 rotations. The next time with 4 washers it took 5.38 seconds to make 15 rotations. When the washers were cut off the bottom while the top was spinning the 1 washer flew about 5 feet away.
DISCUSSION
The two washers took an average of 7.4 seconds to go 15 rotations because there was less mass on the bottom meaning less centripetal force. That is why the 4 washers spun 15 rotations in an average of 5.38 seconds.
