Like the North, the Confederacy borrowed an immense amount of money in order to be able to pay for the war. However, since Congress was planter-dominate, they would not impose heavy taxes that planters would have to pay for. Instead, they printed an immense number of paper money. Congress allowed military officers to hijack goods and pay citizens with that money; many southerners extremely disliked these attacks and in some cities, food riots were started. Nearly 100,000 men had abandoned the Confederate army by the end of the war.
In the aftermath of the civil war with the union the victors political change was inevitable. The north had just won a war fought over the issue of slavery and to not address the issue permanently after their victory would be a failure on their part. Despite heated tensions and many in the south opposed to any final resolution on the subject of slavery that did rule in their favor Abraham Lincoln and his allies were able to garner enough support in congress to pass the 13th,14th, and 15th amendments. These 3 amendments clarified finally the rights established in the constitution applied to African Americans just as much as those of European descent.
After the Civil War, the U.S.A. had to reconstruct itself which means that it basically had to rebuild itself so it could go back into its normal form. While the U.S.A. was going into reconstruction they made many Amendments. But, the most important Amendment did not accomplish its goals. I am talking about the 15th Amendment that was created with purpose to let African Americans vote. But, thankfully one of the Amendments greatly succeeded and that is the 13th Amendment, which greatly succeeded.
One of the causes leading to the Civil War was Slavery in the United States of America which was without a doubt allowed in the South, although on the other hand forbidden in the North. Having slaves was a big issue between the North and South because the United States was said to be “free” and to have “freedom” but is against the idea of everybody being treated the same. According to Document K, a man named Charles Sumner was an abolitionist from the Northern state of Massachusetts. Sumner didn’t like the idea of blacks being treated worse than whites and allegedly attacked pro-slavery men described as “hirelings from the drunken spew and vomit from an uneasy civilization.” (Doc K This distinctly shows that Northerners were introduced to the idea of the
The Civil War, from 1861-1864, was a collection of brutal battles between the North and South as a result of their sectional differences. Although the North won the military victory against the South, the South was able to keep many of its policies in place after the Civil War. During the Reconstruction Period, 1865-1877, it was evident that the South won the Civil War in many ways because of their political and social policies that they implemented or kept in place. While the 13th through 15th amendments changed social issues for a period of time in the South by allowing more opportunities and rights for former slaves, the South continued their social dominance over black people. Also, politically, near the beginning of Reconstruction and
1877 Essay In the year of 1877 a lot of events shaped the way will would look at the nation. Many of them could have been handled better but like what my grandpa would say “when win some and you lose some”. In 1877 there was conflicts and problems that the nation will have to confront. The regions of the country that most of these conflicts occur in affected those regions heavily.
(Dattel) The Confederacy was militarily outnumbered by the dominant Union States and therefore lost the Civil war. The outcome of the American Civil War demonstrated the strength of the federal government, as their legitimate approach caused the preservation of the American States as a unity. Additionally, they immediately set a foundation for the emancipation of the Black community by implementing the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment in the upcoming years. These amendments were part of the Reconstruction period, the period where the Republicans tried to protect the 'freedmen' and create political uniformity, in specific by impeding the rebellious South to progress in their return in the political system.
“A group of people decided they’d had enough. They took a stand and in doing so began the New York Gay Activist movement. Which eventually spread to other parts of the country…. I very much doubt they know the impact of their decision to stand firm that day in 1969, but it’s because of those people that gay rights exist in this country today,” Lynley Wayne, LGBT Writer. Everyday people are trying to stand up for themselves.
After the Civil War, the entire United States, especially the southern states that had supported the Confederacy, were in poor condition. The country needed to rebuild itself and therefore entered a period of Reconstruction. One of the primary aspects of the Reconstruction Era was extending rights to the millions of slaves emancipated by the thirteenth amendment that were in desperate need of help. To accomplish these intentions, Congress proposed the fourteenth and fifteenth constitutional amendments aimed at giving former slaves more rights and a fair chance at being successful. These amendments were then ratified by the states, officially putting them into effect.
The website I chose for this assignment is http://www.legendsofamerica.com/na-ghostdance.html. Throughout the course of the Civil War, Southerner’s felt as if the North was impending upon state’s rights and their way of life, which was based on slavery, was put at risk by the Union . At different points in the war, Southerners felt that the Union posed a bigger threat than before, especially after Abraham Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation speech. The Civil War was not only fought by free Americans, but as times changed, enslaved people also took up arms alongside the Union and fought the Confederacy. The inevitable Civil War resulted in the South’s demise and them rejoining the Union. When the Southern States began to secede, they felt as if the Union and Northern Democratic party we’re threatening the lifestyle they had grown so used to.
The Civil War is characterized as the bloodiest war in American History. From 1861 to 1865, the North and South fought over several of disagreements and encounters. The Civil War caused hundreds and thousands of men to lose their life, about 620,000 soldiers had died. The Civil War was fought in Pennsylvania, Texas, New Mexico, and Florida. Many events occurred leading up to the Civil War, that divided the nation and would cause long term effects on the country. Debates, discriminatory encounters, and political disputes were all contributors to the downfall of the nation before the Civil War. The Constitution, secession, and the Inaugural Address also threatened the unity of the country. The Missouri crisis was more or less the turning point of the country and provided a reason for disunion to be in the future. There was an argument over whether Missouri would be a slave state or a free state.
THE STONEWALL RIOTS The Stonewall riots are widely believed to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States. Considered by some to be the "Rosa Parks" moment of the gay rights movement in America, the riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York, in the early hours of June 28th, 1969. This single event has left a resounding impact on the fight for LGBT rights that can still be seen today. Throughout the 50s and 60s in the United States, the FBI along with local police departments kept close watch on what they believed to be "homosexual activity".
