The study of Psychology plays an important role in our everyday lives. I have always had an interest in psychology more specifically, how the mind works. The one area that hits home to me in psychology is depression. This course taught me factors that can influence mental illness and ways to cope. Depression involves “specific negative ways of thinking about ones situation.” Even though depression is more prevalent in women, there are methods to identify and cope with the depression of females and males, to change the way of thought. I had always been shy and introverted since I can remember. In high school I was diagnosed with MDD, better known as clinical depression. This mental illness can be debilitating at times. For example, the framing effect by looking at a situation in a different light. Perception, I learned can make a huge difference on how you see things and the world around you. Also stress can play a big role in depression, making an individual more vulnerable, but with “calming activities, meditation and mindfulness or exercise” can help control the symptoms. As I studied more about depression, I became to know that it can come from “genetics, trauma, or environmental experiences.” Also factors like violence and parental neglect are all dependent as risk factors of depression. I am able to understand that you don’t have to live with mental illness and that you can take measures to cope and possibly execute the feelings with tasks such as exercise and talk therapy to change a negative
