In the beginning of this novel, Clyde is a young infant who follows his family through religion worshiping, and praying in the name of god on the corner of streets. Along with his siblings ranging from all ages, the oldest being fifteen years old. Following with "Theodore Dreiser: Overview." written by Earl Rovit stating “Clyde's beginnings as a small embarrassed boy walking the city streets with his missionary parents”.
