Leadership in the Coast Guard is the skill of leading self, people, performance, change and the Coast Guard. During the course of my career I admired Admiral Allen during the challenging Deepwater Horizon incident. He captured everyone’s attention when he spoke, spoke in plain layman’s terms, and was a no non-sense type of guy. Another leader that influenced me was a particular Petty Officer First Class at my first unit that taught me to believe in myself and showed me that I knew more than I thought I did. He gave me the confidence to go to MST-A school and succeed when I had doubts. I decided then that I also wanted to pay it forward to others as I moved up the ranks and became a leader.

This can be accomplished by establishing more communication about it with subordinates and coworkers in order to create more buy in. Members are not always aware of the common set of values that we must all share in running the organization and it is up to Senior Enlisted Leaders to provide that platform.
Being clear on my philosophy of leadership is another leadership practice that I need to improve upon. I can succeed by communicating more with my unit about what true leadership is about and mentor those upcoming enlisted leaders and junior officers that need to know these tools. Mentorship is a great way to ensure that this is accomplished.
The third leadership practice that I need to improve upon is letting individuals know about my confidence in their abilities. The survey observers included an array of individuals as far back as 2007. During that time I was a new Chief and was still performing an E-6 job. Therefore, I had not been mentored nor trained in the leadership that I was to be groomed into. However, over time I have adjusted my leadership style with each new Chief rank and have become a better champion of acknowledging personnel abilities. Observers from that era would not know the current leader that I have become. I acknowledge their viewpoints, because it is good to know what I was not doing as a leader when I first became a Chief for current comparison
