The United States Navy is a “global force for good,” representing ideals of honor, courage, and commitment. Becoming a Naval Officer provides me the opportunity to develop lifelong leadership skills while serving my country. The desire to help others and develop as a leader are the principles that guide me. I have held positions of leadership as Richwoods CyberPatriot team captain and within the Richwoods MCJROTC program as a cadet officer. The lessons I have learned are many, chief among them is efficient organization and communication, taking responsibility, and leading by example. When I assumed the role as CyberPatriot captain, the team communication and organization was very poor. I instituted a system where the entire team communicates with one another and all of our resources and training material are organized and easily accessible for all. This allowed the team to learn, giving them a place to put the research they’ve compiled so that everyone can study the material. In training, fairness is key. One must understand that a cadet in their first semester needs to be trained differently and held to a different standard than a cadet in their third semester. To accomplish this task, I delegate responsibilities. Many times having a more experienced cadet help train as I provide guidance. The more experienced cadet learns how to train and lead others, as the less experienced cadets learn what is required. This exercise requires trust from the Senior Marine Instructor and the Marine Instructor, as well as the respect from those that I am training.
