National Honor Society Examples

Throughout my years in school, I have heard my older friends discuss about National Honor Society. As a child, I thought it was just a club for students who had good grades. However, as I continued to grow older, I understood the message of NHS –– to be a student who not only had the brains, but to have a heart of compassion for their community. NHS highlights the importance of building your own self up as well as building up those around you. After listening to my friends’ conversations about what they had been doing with NHS, I knew that this was something big that I wanted to take place in. It would be a place where I could use the skills I had gained over the years to help the people in my community. I have the leadership skills and experience

Hoops for Hope is a team fundraising basketball tournament to earn money for children diagnosed with cancer in the Kansas City area. Part of the competition is having a strong team spirit, this requires each team to come up with a theme and costume. Since my team decided to join the fundraiser a little late, we had little time to organise the group. There were complications over costumes because we were divided over what our theme should be. This led to arguments between the team members for two days. As a captain, I had to make sure everyone was happy and that we could come up with a solution. Rather than joining the debates, I talked to different members individually and discovered what was bothering them. With this information, my co-captain and I communicated with the whole group to come up with an answer that satisfied everyone. Despite the short time given, my team was able to raise money to help the families in our community and peacefully solve the challenges within our group. Even though we fought over our team theme, at the end of the tournament, we still won Best Costume Award! This event highlights my ability to communicate with others and to be considerate of each person’s opinion. I volunteered there from June 2015 to January 2016, when I moved to Virginia. This was a place I would visit for two hours every week. I helped the pet shelter by washing dog bowls, cleaning the litter boxes, making rounds on food, socializing with the cats, and making sure the cats were happy and healthy. The two hours spent at KCPP every week were always the highlights of my week. It was something I always looked forward to because not only do I help the workers and cats, but the experience is always so enjoyable. I love socializing with the cats and through my weekly visits to see them, I have polished my responsibility skills. I understand the importance of keeping things in order and looking after each cat individually. When I clean out a cat’s personal litter box, I need to have the supplies ready and in place, in addition to making sure the cat isn’t upset or running out the room. Besides interacting with the cats, I also communicate with the humans around the shelter. I get along well with the employees as they give me commands, but I’m also able to take a leadership position when teaching new volunteers. With my knowledge of each cat, I am able to hold conversations with potential adopters in finding the perfect cat for them. I’ve learned to be approachable and to adapt to each person’s personality.
