Code of Ethics Paper When I complete my undergraduate program at Western Kentucky University, I plan to attend law school and pursue a career as a lawyer. Furthermore, I plan to practice law in Kentucky. Therefore, I have chosen to use the Kentucky Rules of Professional Conduct under the Kentucky Bar Association as a guideline for my personal code of ethics. According to the Kentucky Bar Association (2015), competence, diligence, and communication are key ethical values of the legal profession.
A major component of the Kentucky Rules of Professional Conduct is competence (Kentucky Bar Association, 2015). This means that it is the duty of a lawyer to ensure their client gets a competent representation. Such a degree of competence is important to meet their client’s right to a fair trial with due process of law. The legal process is a highly complex and expensive one. Therefore, people do not usually enter into it unless their case has a major bearing on their livelihood. That being said, in these serious instances, people are entrusting attorneys with their future. Clients recognize that they cannot understand the complex legal process on their own, so they place their well-being in the hands of a lawyer. Thus, it is the duty of the attorney to not only give their client a strong representation, but to communicate the process clearly and make it as easy as possible for the client to understand. In making these tough decisions and facing potentially drastic changes to their lifestyles, clients must be well-informed.
