Code Of Ethics Released By National Society Of Professional Engineers

Engineers are provided with codes of ethics from which they should base their decisions on. These fundamental rules ensure that engineers make decisions that will be the most helpful and productive to everyone involved. Overall, every engineer must follow the Code of Ethics released by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). In addition, disciplines of engineering typically have their own Code of Ethics. This specific set of boundaries that apply to me would be set forth by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). NSPE Code of Ethics

The rudimentary rules of the general Code of Ethics are to value the safety of the public, only perform services in fields where you are competent, only issue public statements that are true, be faithful to employers and clients, do not be deceptive, and enhance the engineering profession through honorable actions [10]. The most relevant statement to my situation would be the first listed: valuing the safety of the public. This code also mentions engineers “using their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare” [11], just as the general code for engineers did. However, this code featured another clause about how engineers must consider how their profession impacts the environment and sustainability [11]. This clause could point to either decision being correct, as nuclear energy is more clean than many alternative fuels. Conversely, it was not exactly good for the environment to be exposed to so much radiation when the infamous reactor exploded.
