I chose culturally adapted cognitive behavioral therapy for childhood anxiety disorders as a topic for my competency assignment for Children and Families class. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses experienced by children and adolescents, and untreated anxiety symptoms can develop into various disorders, significantly affecting children’s cognitive, behavioral, and somatic functioning. Although childhood anxiety disorders are highly prevalent, they often remain understudied and undertreated. In addition, culturally sensitive assessment measures for these type of disorders are also needed because the assessment of anxiety needs to take place within a cultural context. I strongly believe in culturally competent research on anxiety among ethnically, racially and culturally diverse youth. I find sharing them with the students especially important because of the applicability of the information to practice. Furthermore, Professional Portfolio assignment had a great educational and practical value to me, preparing MSW students to present themselves as professionals. Finally, working on this Master Integrative Assignment was an amazing journey summarizing my greatest points of learning, challenges, and growth as a future professional social worker.
Along with expanding my intellectual horizons, I have been also gaining deeper insight into my own self, including the need for self-care. Furthermore, once I understood that I have to start where the client is, to build a focus on interaction and practice awareness of not imposing my own goals or values on clients, I feel more confident in my helping
