Coincidence: Not Fate In the play, Romeo and Juliet, two teenagers claim to be so deeply in love that they will die for each other. In Romeo and Juliet Romeo killed himself because he believes Juliet is dead. Juliet was actually alive and woke up to see Romeo had already killed himself. Juliet decided to kill herself because of her love for Romeo. They both took their own lives, but they would not have had to kill themselves if several coincidental events did not occur. Not only could their lives have been saved, but three other lives could have been saved as well. The facts that Rosaline did not love Romeo back, Friar Lawrence was willing to marry Romeo and Juliet, and Prince Escalus exiled Romeo help prove that this tragedy was caused by a coincidence. If Rosaline would have loved Romeo back, Romeo would have never moved on to Juliet. At the beginning of the play Romeo was in love with Juliet’s cousin, Rosaline. Instead, the marriage just causes even more problems for the families. The wedding caused even more problems because Juliet’s father wanted Juliet to marry Paris after she was already married to Romeo. This caused a lot of problems. Juliet was mad at her father for making her do this. To get out of marrying Paris she took a special potion that made it seem like she was dead. Juliet was not actually dead. Romeo came to save her, but he truly thought she was dead. This caused him to kill himself before she woke up again. When Juliet woke up she saw Romeo was dead, and she took her life as well. Also, Friar Lawrence could have prevented the deaths of Mercutio, Tybalt, Romeo, Juliet, Romeo’s mother, and Paris by not marrying the
