The Cold War was a period of heightened tension and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union that lasted from 1947 to 1991. The Soviets were responsible for starting the Cold War. This idea is supported by evidence of Soviet aggression and expansionism in Eastern Europe and their impact on relations with Western powers, as well as Truman's policy of containment, which was a response to Soviet aggression.

The origins of the Cold War can be traced back to World War II, when tensions between the US and USSR began to emerge. The US saw itself as a defender of democracy against totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany, while the USSR viewed itself as a protector of communism against capitalist imperialism. After WWII, these differences led to increased tensions between the two superpowers.
