The Cold War was a period of political and military tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, lasting from the end of World War II in 1945 to the late 1980s. It was a time of ideological conflict between capitalism and communism, as well as a struggle for global dominance. At the end of World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union emerged as the two dominant superpowers in the world. The Soviet Union was determined to spread communism throughout the world, while the United States was equally determined to contain the spread of communism.
The first major event of the Cold War was the Truman Doctrine in 1947, March 12, President Harry Truman delivered a speech to Congress in which he outlined a new policy of containment aimed at preventing the spread of communism. This policy became known as the Truman Doctrine and committed the United States to providing military and economic aid to countries threatened by communism. This was followed by the Marshall Plan, June 5, 1947, Secretary of State George Marshall announced a plan to provide economic assistance to Western Europe to help rebuild after World War II. In the United States, there was a climate of fear and suspicion of communism, which led to a series of investigations and hearings by the House Un-American Activities Committee and the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee. These investigations targeted alleged communist sympathizers and members of left-wing organizations, leading to a climate of fear and intimidation. In the Soviet Union, there was a similar climate of fear, as the government cracked down on dissent and opposition to the Communist Party.
