As a born-again Christian, I firmly believe in the cross, the resurrection, the divinity, and the humanity of Jesus Christ. His love and mercy has shaped and changed my life, and as a result I have decided to dedicate my life for Christ’s church and His Kingdom. It was never a sudden ‘magical’ change in my lifestyle, but a gradual submergence in His grace.
One of the reasons why I decided to pursue my degree in Christian education and theological study is because of my best friend. The relationship with her had me realize the importance of proper Christian education. A few weeks ago, one of my friends in college attempted suicide. Moreover, it happened during the finals week, thus my grades dropped drastically and so did my motivation for everything. However, my faith in Christ helped me to recover from such depression, and I was able to see through the enemy’s attack and to identify what caused the depression. Depression only brings isolation and death, but the danger of dogmatism seemed far more fatal to me. When dogmatism freezes analytic thinking, not only one’s perspective narrows, but it can also leads to the rejection of faith. After all, the experience had me re-evaluate my goals and purpose of life. I realized the significance of proper Christian education in nurturing the next generation of Christians. Although I have studied in a conservative Christian college, I see the need for a multidimensional perspective and theology that can analyze issues comprehensively instead of just judging. For a long time, my struggle, bitterness, resentment, and confusion as a missionary kid seemed to me to be unfair and unnecessary. Throughout my life, I have been a passionate Christian, but inside I always questioned the truth. In order to get rid of my doubt, I comforted myself saying that there must be something to Christianity if many people dedicate their lives to Jesus. Yet I did not know what this ‘something’ was. My spiritual life was not only unstable and inconsistent, but also filled with complaints since I did not understand why I was suffering. However, my whole attitude toward Him changed since I met Him personally. Amazingly, when God opened up my eyes and showed me the bigger picture, I came to understand why He had let me go through all those hardships. My background and story as a missionary kid allow me to help other missionary kids because I understand their struggles and concerns. For example, my journey for education was rather unusual and I was always a pioneer who did not have any information or mentor about homeschooling and college admissions, and my example became a model for other missionary families. Consequently, I had to be homeschooled and study for the college entrance exam by myself. Fortunately, this experience has helped me in advising other missionary kids who are being homeschooled for the first time,
