When I look back on my younger years in my childhood, many of the memories have something to do with hockey. Looking back I remember the time spent at the rink watching my dad play on Monday nights, all of my brother’s games and all of the Red Wings’ games on TV. With all of this, the love of hockey was ingrained into my psyche and my heart, so from a young age I have always wanted to play hockey.
Now being 17 years old and a junior in high school, I have had the opportunity to play the great game of hockey for many years now and have learned a few things about myself as a player. I have learned that I have never been a great scorer like my brother always was growing up. I also have learned that I am by no means the biggest, strongest, or most skilled player on the ice. I was rarely relied upon on the power play, or to score many goals. But, this all changed this year when we got a new coach for the Grand Haven/Spring Lake Varsity Hockey team. He has turned the team rules and style of play from the coaching staff of previous years on it’s head for the better, and with this I have also had to change as a player and a person.

Now we now realize how important it is to work hard all of the time because if you don’t you won’t get better as the pace of everything we do is so fast. Also the hard practices bring the team together much more as we work through the pain and our fatigue to finish drills and keep each other motivated, which has made us more of a tight-knit group.
