During the 2008 presidential election I fell in love with politics, allowing me to make the decision to major in political science and become a public servant. My dream job is to run and be elected to the United States Congress. When participating in the requirements for the Garnet and Gold Scholars Society, I realized that my experiences in services, leadership, and an internship has greatly complemented each other on the fact that they involve some form of politics and working with or for a public servant. This is because, I completed my internship requirement with the Al Lawson for Congress Campaign, I completed the majority of my service hours with the Florida Democratic Party, and I’m serving as the Director of Public Policy with the
No matter what time zone I am in, my phone buzzes most frequently when I am asleep. Whether a missed call from a friend in Kenya, an email from a musical collaborator in Canada, or a LinkedIn message from a U.K. investor in my educational startup, I eagerly wake each morning to many new notifications. Growing up, I traveled extensively, living on three different continents. In fact, my passport looked like my coloring book. Learning five languages and adapting to foreign environments while maintaining my identity, has taught me to value different skills, including networking.
Conforming to John F. Kennedy's book Profiles in Courage, one who places their convictions ahead of their career is someone who is politically courageous. Bernie Sanders, a socialist politician, former mayor of Burlington, senator of Vermont, and current presidential candidate, is a prime example of a political profile of courage. His political career in its entirety has focused plainly on the greater good of the American people. Never has he given his fellow politicians the gratification of putting themselves, or their careers, first. In politics today, world-weary candidates have succumbed to their moral and ethical convictions, doing no matter what it takes to win.
VI. Conclusion For such a previously untouched discipline of political science, it is difficult to disagree with the theories that Jacqueline Kennelly proposes. Any type of discussion that views all youth as uninterested, unorganized, lazy and uninformed is not valid. Kennelly attempts to break down this stereotype that exists between the terms “youth” and “political involvement.”
My hands became clammy and my heart started racing. I did not want to believe the words coming out of my mother’s lips, “His kidney failed three weeks after the operation, he is dead”. I was just 5 years old and I felt like there was no purpose to live. My father was everything to me. I already missed his genuine kindness, the way his smile formed whenever he talked to me about life, and the times where we had father-son time at the airport, watching airplanes fly.
In life I have noticed leadership to be a key attribute of mine. This was not a quality I would seek to obtain, it was more like one bestowed upon me. Growing up I was the second oldest and only daughter of four children. Though we were rich in spirit, financial hardships made it difficult and at times impossible to fulfill the basic needs and wants of most kids. With the odds stacked against us, I began at a young age to realize that I had to take charge, I had to make a change, I had to lead.
Candidate Personal Statement: Why do you want to be a part of student government? I want to be a part of student government because I want to further serve my community within Flushing High School as well as support people I hold dear within the school. If I were elected to student government, I would want to unite the community as well as succeed in performing my leadership duties within the student community. I believe my previous experience in Bring Change to Mind (BC2M), Peer Group Connections (PGC), as well as my Sisters Keeper (MSK), has properly prepared me for this position as they have helped me build leadership skills such as the public speaking and a keen sense of corporation in group settings. These three services have prioritized giving back to the community and further supporting Flushing High School.
Most people I know have college education ranging through many generations of their family, but unfortunately my family doesn't have that luxury. I come from immigrant parents who made me realize that success is earned, not given and in order to achieve success one must aspire to work hars . Since moving to the United States eighteen years ago, my parents have taught me necessities needed to succeed in America. From living with the satisfaction that I will receive a college education to providing me with the tools neccesecary in life my parents have always been there for me. In my early childhood, my parents taught me how important a strong work ethic was and made me understand the importance of education and the prospect it provides.
As a young minority male with two African-born parents who received zero education, acceptations were high at a young age. When I was five years old I attended PS 156 elementary school. The school had poor academic grades and eventually shut down after receiving a F. I always managed to maintain mostly As and was consistently top of my classes. I loved school and hated to see it end. When I was in fourth grade I maintained a high grade even though it was sort of a middle school atmosphere.
Everyone lives life chasing a dream, a goal, success, and happiness. All people work hard to own their dream home, car, and have a family. This is the American Dream, the pursuit of happiness. The background and morals that you come from define you and it's up to yourself to determine if you will overcome the obstacles placed in your life.
A quote from Doctor Seuss, “Sometime you will know the value of a moment until it become a memory.” What will your legacy be? Everyone wants to be remembered in some way. Whether it is being remembered as the lazy kid who snoozes through class, or the dedicated student who is always prepared for class. For example, a legacy to me is something that is left by a person to be remembered by.
Why do I want to attend college? College is an honorary achievement and it separates the determined from the undetermined. Owning a college to degree is an honor and an ecstatic feeling. Through college, that job is that much closer in the grasp. Through college, a person can perform at an elite level and really push themselves for greatness.
Two months earlier, I knew what I wanted to do; I wanted to run for Senior Class President. I never really saw myself as the popular kid, and this is kind of the stereotype for senior class presidents, but I was determined to try. Only one person was running against me, so this was a head to head. I thought of myself as the better candidate, as I think I’ve always stood up for the students of Hebron. Hours went into making posters, into meeting people, and anything else I could think of that might give me that slight edge up.
Ever since I was little, I have had a passion for helping people. No matter what I am doing in the moment, I am always willing to put it on hold for the person in need. If a fellow classmate needs help with a homework problem, I am gladly willing to explain the problem to help them better understand the content. For me, it is such a humbling experience to see the person finally comprehend the subject material after I help them. Throughout my life, technology has assisted me in helping out the people around me.
Whether people know it or not, politics play an important role in our lives. As the younger generation is starting to become more politically active than past generations, I think more people are starting to notice. I think a revolution has started in the political world I think in the next few elections we will see a dramatic change in everything related to politics and its going to be incredible. Growing up in the church, I was always aware of what was going on in politics because the adults were always talking about how the government was always trying to attack the church and its rights. Both political parties have affected my life for multiple reasons.
