As stated earlier, I truly enjoy being able to help others. It is my belief that the want and need to help others has become one of my biggest assets. The opportunity that would be provided through this program would prepare me to give quality professional help to those who so desperately need it. The two biggest areas of growth for me would be learning new concepts and the process of application. In society today, well-rounded counselors are extremely important when it comes to believing in values, morals, and ethics now more than ever.

During my training and education to become a professional counselor I plan to engage with my professors and apply the feedback that they give me so that I can better develop the skills that I need to be able to demonstrate professional dispositions. American Counseling Association (ACA) stated that ‘Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers individuals, families and groups to accomplish mental health, education and career goals.’ Most of the people will face a lot of encounters throughout their life which need some inspiration, advice, support or counseling. Moreover people that have some problems like depression, mental and behavior health most likely use counseling to help them stand on their feet back to achieve goals that stunted before. Counselor is a person that trained to help the people who need help in their problem and focus them on healing. The task to be a counselor is quite challenging as it will take years and lot of dedication just to help people to enjoy their life.
Key philosophies of the profession has developed from the Freudian view that people are basically sexual animals (Freud, 1905/1958) (Hansen, 2012), to the vision of Carl Rogers self-actualization model and vision of human strength (Rogers, 1951) (Hansen, 2012), and the behavorists theory that describe humans as basicaly computers that can be programed to change (Beck, 1976) (Hansen, 2012), counselors have witness dramatic and lasting human change. Historically, creative visons have fueled advances in counseling, not scientific discoveries (Hansen, 2012).

Through me becoming aware of the situation it enables me to maintain a professional healthy relationship and bias with the client. Therapy will allow me to learn how to observe, acknowledge confront, and deal with the situation ethically, and right away when it starts to happen. It can also allow me to identify and explore my blind spots that I am confronted with through my clients, and will allow me to help set my personal life away from work, and help succeed professionally. I believe that through personal therapy, it will enable me to engage in my own personal self-awareness and overall well-being, and decrease the possibility of burnout that comes with the profession. I can vividly remember the advice given to me by my high school counselor. I was broken down, whispering to myself that I was not college bound. It was my counselor who made me realize that persistence was a key factor to continuing my education. The wisdom that was shared to me that day was instilled into my mind and was endorsed in my heart. I want to be the person that gives a glimpse of hope to students that need an extra push through education, just like it was given to me.
Doctoral level counselor education is central to the development of future educators, researchers, and supervisors, being that this is the terminal degree for professional counseling. Because I was created to serve others, becoming a licensed professional counselor will allow me to have the certifications required to provide counseling services and to make a meaningful impact on the lives of families, individuals, and marriages. My pursuit of a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling derives from a commitment of servitude by facilitating families through the provision of community and school counseling. Through this provision, I desire to promote the socioemotional well-being of individuals and foster interpersonal relationships needed for individuals to thrive in family, school and society. Observing the students and families I work with as an educator yielded a need for marriage and family counselors in my own community. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Argosy University with Magna Cum Laude honors and became the first in my family to graduate from college in 2014.
Having a professional identity as a counselor is to get a clear understanding of what type of counselor you want to be, a long with, what responsibilities are required of you, and what the clients expect of you as a counselor. According to Remley & Herlihy (2016), there are four beliefs that counselors help clients through mental health issues. Wellness model is important to counselors because when you focus on wellness your not focusing on just on aspect of your client life, you focus on everything in entirety. This model focus on the individual to accomplish the most positive mental health (Remley & Herlihy, 2016). Counselors help assist the client in resolving issues such as emotional and personal issues.
Counseling is a process of empowering persons so that they can find the strength to deal with conflicting issue(s). It is the process of helping them understand how their current thoughts or behaviors are interfering with their present and future goals. Finally, it is about helping them create strategies to regain a path to the desired goal, and how they can maintain that pathway. Before a treatment plan can be developed, counselor’s need to conduct an initial interview of the clients’ social, physical and psychological world. Clients come seeking counseling from all spheres of live and from different purposes (court ordered, to please relatives, or seeking self-help).
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Not being able to cope with certain situations in my life, turned to many problems and made it hard to live, happily.
