College Admissions Essay: The Subject Of Studying Terrorism

The subject of terrorism enthralls me. Terrorism, the source of much devastation and fear, is a subject that has been at the forefront of the world’s attention for almost the entirety of my life. Coming of age during the ever changing, and seemingly ever extending, war on terror has led me to want to both understand the complexities of problem, and do what I am capable of to help address it. During my undergraduate studies, I began my efforts to understand terrorism. Studying both philosophy and political science allowed me to delve deep into the subject. Broaching terrorism from a philosophical perspective helped me develop an understanding of its theoretical underpinnings and introduced me to some of the concepts that have been develop in attempts to address the predominant problem such as, universal jurisdiction and intervention. Attacking the subject from a political perspective allowed me to discuss the certain climates that give rise to terrorist organizations, the mechanisms the organizations utilize in their movements, and the goals they seek to bring about. Beginning to understand terrorism from those two different perspectives further enthralled me in the problem and reaffirmed my desire to help address it. Further, attending law school will allow me to join the legal profession which is one that will undoubtedly play a critical role in addressing terrorism. For, addressing a problem, even as terrible and unconventional as terrorism, must be done in way that is legal and ethical, if the overall goal is to bring a greater sense of justice and peace to the world.
