College Admissions Essay: Why Art Is Important To Me

My hands are home to a million acrylic rainbows. Pastel hues of lavender and stark tones of burgundy now permanently reside within my skin, flowing through my veins and into my heart. The brush becomes an extension of my arm, the bristles my fingertips. Paint saturates the canvas, and I am content. Art allows for the tangible creation of our very thoughts and visions, untethering us from woes and sorrows of the world so that we may grow as people, shaping a better understanding not only those around us, but ourselves. These are the constant underlying reasons for the creation of the arts, regardless of medium, and thus these are the reasons why I have found myself enslaved to them.
When I am captured within my works, the world around me slows. Time itself appears to elude me, slowing and simultaneously quickening while I photograph loving moments or paint out my interpretations of the same. Drawing, sketching, photographing, sculpting, or painting- each holds endless possibilities, each a representative of thoughts to be formed. Honing my skills with these daily, the ever expanding horizons of each is baffling. With every passing day, new possibilities for art are opened, new avenues to explore. Knowing that you poured yourself into a piece of artwork, spending hours upon hours to perfect it, and finally revealing the finished product to yourself is the ultimate reward. One of these projects that I have been vying to see finished is a mural. No less than 150 feet long by 10 feet high, this enormous painting every aspect of school life, ranging from clubs and sports to graduation itself. As certainly the largest canvas that I have yet to face, my goal is to complete it by my own graduation. Some view it as lofty, but I understand it as a challenge readily
