By not paying athletes, they must work hard for a future in pro sports and show they deserve to move on to the next level. If the NCAA decides to pay the players, why would they continue to try as hard if they are already being rewarded? Another reason why college athletes should not get paid to play is because in some circumstances, colleges would start getting rid of less popular programs to insure they have enough money to give to the athletes making” all of the money, which is unfair to those who are good at other sports. Dohrmann emphasizes this point by saying “a CEO would look at the balance sheet and eliminate some, if not all, of the unprofitable products” (paragraph 19).

March Madness, a college basketball tournament that goes on for a month in March grosses around 900 million dollars which go to the NCAA and the colleges that participate in it. However, the college players don’t make any of that money. Rather the college athletes have to work hard all season and don’t make any money off of their play. College athletes should get paid though there are economical, educational, social and legal reasons why they wouldn’t be able to get paid.

In 1910 the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, the original association for making rules to help govern college athletics, became the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). This was the beginning of a dynasty. A few years later the NCAA began to organize national championships for various sports, with the most popular sport being basketball. Because of all the attention college sports started attracting the NCAA decided to allow universities to give out athletic scholarships to deserving athletes in 1957, which only further increasing the popularity of college sports. Since Basketball was the most popular sport in college at the time the NCAA decided to expanded the tournament in from eight teams to thirty-two in 1957.
