In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I personally connect Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’s relationship to softball. The game of softball is such a duality to me. On the one hand, it’s a game that brings everyone together. But on the other, softball is a game of failure and very mentally draining. These are two completely different sides and aspects of this one sport.
Softball has been in my life since I was five years old. It always brings me joy and pushes me to be the best I can be. It is a sport where I can push myself but have fun while doing it. Softball is known to be a game of failure. The game’s stats are generally very low as the game is built against the batter. There are nine players on the field that are against one batter at a time. Athletes are known to go three for ten batting, and that is considered amazing. But the mental strain and pressure placed by parents and coaches to be better are exhausting. Three for ten generally isn’t good enough for a lot of coaches and parents. This causes players to constantly be pushing themselves to be better, but don’t take into account that the “better” that they’re striving for is considered perfection to others. This type of mentality is draining for so many women who play the sport. Due to this, there are so many players who are constantly quitting the game or want to quit. The game is so mentally draining to the point where if someone isn’t going to play in college, there is no point in continuing past freshman year. If there is a want to play in college, that also causes a lot of stress. Players have to play almost perfectly, and they have to really put themselves out there. Coaches aren’t going to be out looking for players. Kids have to go to them and make them see them for who they are, then they have to perform under pressure.
