Dyslexia is a neurological-based specific learning disability characterized by language handling deficiencies, and impairment in the ability to recognize and translate words into sentences. It is said that a reading disability reflects a continuous deficit as opposed to an arrest in development and can occur in a person of any level of intelligence. Dyslexia can be related to hereditary influences, or brain injury. One in five children are thought to have dyslexia and is found to be more prevalent in males. Nelson Rockefeller faced everyday challenges because of his disability (UXL). Dyslexia has many different symptoms and challenges. People with dyslexia are called “dyslexics” (Moragne 17). He gave a speech to encourage other children with learning disabilities that they could turn their disability into positive advantages in their lives just as he did. He said “I know what a dyslexic child goes through. The frustration of not being able to do what other children do easily, the humiliation of being thought not to be bright, when such is not the case at all.” The puzzle children was a special on learning disabilities telecasted on most PBS stations where he gave advice to children with dyslexia (A&E). Some advice he gave the children were accept the fact that you have a problem do not try to hide it, refuse to feel sorry for yourself, and realize that you do not have an excuse you have a challenge.(WordPress).
There are many misconceptions about dyslexia. It is not a result of low intelligence, they can be just as successful by working harder and developing mental discipline (A&E). Nelson accepted the fact that he had a problem and refused to feel sorry for himself. A quote that he has stated many times is “ I was one of the ‘puzzle children’ myself- a dyslexic and I still have a hard time reading today. The key is to never give up”
