Imagine living without representation in the government; a world where people are treated like objects without natural rights. This is how the American colonists lived from the mid-1760’s to the mid-1770’s as taxes and acts were placed upon them without any representation in Parliament. This caused tension between England and the colonies, which consequently, after several failed treaties and negotiations, kicked off the American Revolution. On 23 March 1775, Patrick Henry gave his “Speech to the Second Virginia Convention.”
During the time period of 1763 to 1776 colonists had a list of grievances with the King George III. The King often created salutary neglect towards the colonists because of the French and Indian war he was battling in and this caused Britain to become more relaxed on the Navigation Acts. Once the French and Indian War which ended in 1763. The King would randomly make decisions for the colonists in their lives for example the King forced many of the colonists to pay taxes for an army to patrol them making sure they would follow the Navigation Acts and other acts in place. Which the colonist did not even want in their country because the army would enforce the king's rules.
As the English colonists set foot in the New England area, they disturbed the already 100,000 indigenous people making this place their home. Though having the English over in the Americas brought many new ideas and some positive outcomes, it also brought drastic changes to the lifestyle and number of Indians in New England. While some Indian tribes thrived and worked in harmony with the English, others were not as lucky and would soon face the struggle of surviving. Differing greatly from the French and Dutch colonies, the English handled the problem of dealing with the Indians much more harsh. Without a doubt Thomas Jefferson’s explanation of how to break the law was a very insightful intake on how to properly break the law when the opportunity presents itself. When injustice is present it's the duty of man to stand up for their beliefs and fight for their rights. In order to combat the injustice of the British, Jefferson provided a list of grievances to the American citizens and told Americans that, it was their duty to break the law after asking for a peaceful compromise from the British. The role of a leader is to support and consider what will benefit their people, however, this does not always happen. British colonists left their mother country because they disagreed with the ruling and wanted to be independent of a king. Although separated by an ocean, the colonies were still supported and indirectly ruled by Britain. The British government took advantage of North American resources and cheated the colonists out of their money by placing restrictions of trade and taxing necessary goods.
The colonies have been part of the British crown for 168 years now, but independence is something that America needs. The British had created high taxes with unreasonable causes since they just went to war with the French and Indians in American territory, but colonists should not comply the King’s whims no more. American colonists demand independence since freedom is limited by Britain; for this reason, colonists are thinking about how to obtain it.. The British have planted a seed of hatred in the American colonists thanks to the treatment they have given; consequently, colonists are seeking revenge with the British. Due to the fact that the British have mistreated the Americans, the majority of the American colonists may agree with Patrick Henry and are willing to risk their lives for the freedom that Americans deserve.
