This article focuses on the color-blind ideology that allows white people to participate in and appropriate hip-hop culture. Rodriquez notes that they do so by using the guise of inclusivity of all races to justify their participation in hip hop and to adapt characteristics of the culture without respecting Black identity. He uses his own interviews of several white audience members of hip hop concerts who identified as participants of hip hop culture. Rodriquez identifies two groups resulting from social collectivity to reinforce his argument: consciously collective white groups, who actively reinforce racial segregation and passively collective white groups, who unknowingly unite and reinforce systematic racism through their adherence to color-blind ideology. The participants of his research are part of the latter, who unconsciously reinforce systematic racism through treating cultural objects, namely aspects of hip hop culture, as shareable products and experiences.

I attended a high school that is predominately of color, however, I don't remember a time when a teacher taught the students about systemic racism. So, I decided to take the matter into my own hands – I pressured my history teacher to talk about the issues that currently affect people of color. I recommended a book called "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander to be taught the last few weeks of school. Surprisingly, the teacher agreed to add the book to the curriculum. We talked about systemic racism, the school-to-prison pipeline, and the prison industrial complex.
According to another author from Business NH Magazine, Brenda Lett, she states “We are held back, and hold ourselves back, by deciding not to work collectively to address the lie of superiority and inferiority based on skin color.” (Mowry 61). Students race matters. If people did not notice about their race, is like pretending not to see the consequences for this students. Introduction Race and racism are uncomfortable topics, but ones that must be openly and honestly discussed in order to begin the process of change. This paper will review my background, analyze readings, and openly discuss how the readings relate to me. The readings will be Peggy McIntosh’s “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” Beverly Daniel Tatum’s “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” , Christopher Edmin’s “For White Folks who Teach in the Hood,” and Eduardo Bonilla-Silva’s “Racism without Racists.” Through these readings, I will define race, racism, white privilege, then I will reflect on how I identify with them and they affect education.
Noliwe Rooks argues “Because of that discomfort and because we haven’t learned the skills necessary to engage in deep discussions on the topic, we avoid them at all costs. And when we look for excuses to close off those discussions, we allow misperceptions to spread”. Students are taught not to discuss race because they are taught not to see race when they interact with people; sadly, that is not the case. When people are not taught what racism is and what racism is not, then misunderstandings start to spread. If teachers properly taught students how to discuss race and racism in class, then students would know how to address it when they come across it.
This book is called Racism Without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in the United States, and it was written by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva. It focuses on the new type of racism that has risen in the United States, colorblind racism. Being discriminated against or experiencing bias in the classroom creates a place that is no longer safe for the student. In Layli Long Soldiers article, “Now, You Will Listen '' she tells a story about her daughter standing up and speaking the truth about how her teacher should be more culturally appropriate in the classroom. Layli Long Soldier expresses the heartwarming feeling that she experiences from her daughter's strength to be able to defend and shield a culture that she doesn't even belong to. The courage it takes to be an ally at such a young age should be normalized.
The insights of critical race theory (CRT) are invaluable for advancing racial equity, and schools have a responsibility to integrate CRT into teaching and learning. As Judith C.P. Lin demonstrates in her article, racism adapts insidiously across institutions, hiding behind specialized language and practices that obscure structural discrimination. CRT serves as a powerful lens for exposing this "chameleon-like" racism, no matter the setting. Rather than avoid candid discussions of racism because they are uncomfortable, schools must lean into the discomfort. Openly teaching students about historical injustice, privilege, implicit bias, and systemic oppression is essential for creating a just society.
