Editing is the process of modifying and repositioning video shots to create a final piece of work. This can be done by removing unwanted bits of video footage or even adding special effects. Editing is a crucial part of film production. Film editing involves choosing and putting different shots together to form a sequence. Come Along, Do! Directed by Robert W. The purpose of film editing is that it allows the film to have a flow and will keep the audience engaged throughout the film. Editing also helps with the narrative structure of the film. However, if the film only had one shot the audience would most likely get bored. The first ever film was created by the Lumiére Brothers in 1895. He was one of the first to use ‘montage’ in his films. Montage is a technique of film editing in which separate shots of a film are chosen and edited together to form a sequence where a different meaning is perceived. Editing did not exist when ‘A trip to the Moon’ was created by Melies.
Georges Melies directed ‘Trip to the Moon’ in 1903, a short French silent film. It was approximately a 15 minute film which featured use of editing techniques. Editing did not exist when ‘A trip to the Moon’ was created by Melies.
Film editing today has become highly improved. Editors now mainly use computers or non-linear editing systems to edit films whereas when early films were made editors would use copies of negative prints. Although the process of editing today and in the past consists of mostly the same stages, editing today on computers or non-linear editing system is seen as a lot more effective way.
