Comedian Carol Burnett said “adolescence is just one big walking pimple.” This statement possibly summarizes, in a few words, how adolescents feel about all the biological and emotional changes that occur during this developmental period. Some adolescents may go through this period and not experience any difficulties. Others may experience sexual problems, eating disorders, and substance abuse (Williams, 2012). Because of the hormonal and physical changes some adolescents may experience some type of emotional problem, such as depression. This paper offers a broad overview of an intervention and theory regarding treatment for adolescent depression. The male client is from a single-parent home. His mother and father divorced when he was 13 years old. The male client and the other members obviously knew each other. Each member immediately left their respective parent and approached each other and embraced. The male client and one female member began holding hands and led the other two female members to visit booths that were set-up with free college brochures, catalogs, etc. At approximately 12:50 p.m., the parents and members began to take their seats for the presentations. Puberty is the period of development in early adolescence when hormonal and bodily changes occur. Girls usually experience puberty around the age of 11 and boys around the age of 13. The visible signs of puberty during this time are sexual maturation and increases in height and weight. Physical changes in females include a widening of the hips and smaller waistlines. Pubic and underarm hair appears and menstruation occurs. Boys begin to experience a deepening of the voice. Hair begins to grow on the face, underarms, and pubic area. At about age 13, boys begin to make sperm. During early adolescence, girls are usually taller than boys. By late adolescence, boys usually experience a growth spurt and surpass girls in height. Girls are usually unhappy with their bodies and self-image. Boys are usually more satisfied with their bodies during puberty because the muscle mass increases.
