In the short story Tending Roses, crafted by Lisa Wingate, the short story is of a woman, Katie, who is visiting her Grandma’s farm with her husband and son. She sits in the night, opening up a book about fireflies and wildflowers. She finds herself feeling sentimental about all of this, remembering how she was with her children and what lightning bugs reminded her of. Reading the journal leads Katie to remind herself to look for fireflies because they remind her of her Grandma when she was around and to put time aside to enjoy the smaller things in life.
The author of the novel that I decided to read this week is Walter Dean Myers and the name of the novel is Kick. This novel is about a boy named Kevin and he had never been in trouble before, but he did and he went to juvenile hall. He was a good kid, caught between a rock and a hard place when a female friend asks for his help. He got caught driving her in her father's car, after causing a small accident, but cannot explain the why he was with the girl without getting his friend in trouble.
Public Enemy Number Two The book I chose is called "Public Enemy Number Two" that is about how Nicholas (main character) was framed for a jewel robbery. Now Nick needs to get out of jail, recover a vase from an underground hideout and defuse a ticking time bomb. The main character is bad at keeping secrets because he is a very quiet person.
Always being a fan of sports book, I decided to test the waters and read a fiction novel. Luckily it was a great surprise! Maurice Anderson a young fourteen year old boy has been at progress which is a juvenile facility for 22 months, he has made vast improvements, but is still stuck at progress and is itching to get out. Maurice who goes by
In the short story “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, Miss Strangeworth’s roses are a very significant symbol. The importance of Miss Strangeworth's roses to the overall text is that they assist in portraying Miss Strangeworth's character and aid in developing a deeper understanding of the theme. The roses help portray Miss Strangeworth’s character because at the beginning, the rose garden is absolutely perfect for Miss Strangeworth, and this can be seen when Miss Strangeworth returns home from Mr. Lewis’s shop, “Miss Strangeworth stopped at her own front gate, as she always did, and looked with deep pleasure at her house, with the red and pink and white roses massed along the narrow lawn,” (3). Miss Strangeworth’s “deep pleasure” shows how content Miss Strangeworth is with her roses. The perfection of Miss Strangeworth’s roses is very
James King Is Guilty Monster, by Walter Dean Myers. The book is about a sixteen year old boy named Steve Harmon, who tells his story about the trial for murder he is on. He is also with a twenty two year old man named James King for the same crime. Petrocelli is trying to prove both of them guilty. They each have a defendant to defend them.
Janice Kulyk Keefer’s neutral attitude towards war in the poem “Cherries” suggests that killing is as natural to humans as shopping, living and breathing. In stanza one, the speaker uses an understatement and a carefree tone to suggest that it is a natural thing. The speaker compares “[not having] electricity to boil a kettle,” to “[running] an oxygen tank,/ to keep a baby’s punctured heart/ from fluttering away.” (4-7) due to this understatement and usage of simple words, it feels like the speaker does not find the death of a child any more upsetting than not having electricity to boil water.
The Chrysanthemums Literary Analysis One of the themes of “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck is gender inequality. In this short story, the main character Elisa Allen was a strong, smart woman who was stuck being a common housewife. Elisa wishes she could go out and be like the tinker, sleeping under the stars and adventuring every day of her life. Elisa’s husband owns a ranch of some sorts, and when he tells Elisa of the business deal he’d just made he gave her an unspecific explanation, or a dumbed down one so he doesn’t “confuse her”.
The main character, Theodore Boone has two parents that are lawyers, he basically grew up learning the law. Theo was living as a normal teenage boy, participating in boy scouts, getting good grades in school, hanging out with friends, until he gets framed. One day, his locker gets broken into and robbed, after that it’s a series of downhill events. Theo has stolen tablets in his locker that show up mysteriously, slashed bike tires, shattered windows, and more. All eyes are on Theo, who has very little time to solve this enigma.
Virgil is a very determined individual. He will stop at nothing to solve the case, even if it means that he is in danger. For example, even after he is jumped and Gillespie warns him that he should leave town before someone else tries to attack him, but Virgil insists that he must finish the case before he leaves. “I’ll get out Chief Gillespie,” Virgil answered, “but not until I have delivered Mantoli’s murderer to you together with the proof of his guilt.
There are many young individuals that struggle with their own identity and individuality. Many of them have a hard time coping to figure out who they are and want to be. When a parent is raising a child they teach them their own set of morals and beliefs. In the short story “The Glass Roses” written by Alden Nowlan it shows the struggles of a fifteen year old boy who is trying to live up to his father’s expectations to make him proud.
Occurring in 1914 until 1918 the First World War was a conflict between the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente, later involving the United States. There were many factors that caused high tensions between countries in Europe, which led to a war. The United States involved itself in Europe's war because the circumstances were too large to avoid it. Woodrow Wilson wrote the Fourteen Points speech in order to promote peace and justice.
