Ponyboy Curtis and his brothers are living without parents. Darry works too hard for his age and Soda dropped out of school and got a job. Ponyboy is different from his brothers. He loves movies and books. He watches sunsets and dreams about his old life. He and his brothers, Darry and Sodapop, are members of a gang. The rest of the gang consists of Steve, Two-Bit, Johnny, and Dally. They have a rough time getting by. Johnny’s family hates him and Dally doesn’t care about anything. Pony is walking down the street after a movie when they pull up in their “tuff” looking car and attack him. After this occurs and he and Johnny are at the movies, Pony just lets out everything to a Soc named Cherry. He tells her what his parents were like and how they died. He talks about Johnny and Dally. This explains how Pony feels about his life and his regrets. Pony’s brother Soda is in a serious relationship with a girl named Sandy. He tells Ponyboy he is going to marry her. He says, “I think I’m going to marry Sandy. After she gets out of school and I get a better job and stuff,”(Hinton 17-18). He then finds out that she is pregnant with a baby that is not his. He still wants to marry her but she refuses and ignores him completely. This shows Soda’s true colors. He is a good person who wants to do the honorable thing. Once Ponyboy gets back from being on the run he has to go to court. He is asked only a few questions about life at home and then set free.
