Introduction
Student learning relies greatly on the ability of a teacher or parent during the schooling years for children. The following comparative analysis of two transcripts will be compared – transcript one (O’Neill, 2009) involving a parent and a child in a home environment and transcript two (O’Neill & Gish, 2009) involving a teacher and students in a classroom setting. These transcripts give an understanding of the role of the teacher and the parent and provide differences and similarities and the effects these have on children’s learning outcomes. This approach focuses on students learning about literacy and how literacy skills and knowledge are important in everyday life as opposed to “doing school” (pedagogy of the classroom) or ‘doing the task’ (pedagogy of literacy lesson) (Bull & Anstey, 1996). Learning about literacy is believed a more appropriate style of learning – following Bull and Anstey’s (1996) pedagogy of literacy learning approach. In this literacy learning approach, the focus is on students to understand the usefulness of literacy. Within this teaching pedagogy the teacher explains the purpose of literacy skills to students, this understanding enables students to grasp the literacy process better, this pedagogy highlights the cognitive process, this increases the effectiveness of pedagogy of literacy learning with new learners and beginners (O’Neill, S., 2011). In T1, Aunty Jane demonstrates the pedagogy of literacy learning L50 Aunty Jane: “This story is all about a little gingerbread man” Here Aunty Jane is explaining to Sarah what the story is about while showing Sarah the image of the Gingerbread man on the packaging of the biscuit which is then related to real life situation when reading the book.
