Millions of people died during the revolutionary war. After the U.S won they created a national government called the Articles of Confederation. The government was a government where the federal government didn’t have much power. People like Ben Franklin and James Madison realized it wasn’t working and they created a new government called the Constitution. The replacement of the Articles of Confederation with the Constitution was necessary for the U.S to thrive and survive. No state was stronger than the other because of the great compromise. The great compromise came from combining the virginia and new jersey plans to make large and small states accept the constitution. The large states wanted all representing in the government to be counted by population while small states wanted all the states to have an equal amount of representation. With this new type of government there was now a “National court system,” and “Supreme court,” (American History: From beginnings to 1914). The court systems didn’t make the government to rely on the states. It helped the government create a revenue with being able to make and collect taxes. There are three different branches of government. There was the judicial branch which evaluates laws and is made up of the supreme court and other federal courts. There was the legislative branch which makes the laws and it was made up of congress. Congress was made up the senate and house of representatives. The last branch is known as the executive branch which carries out the laws and is made of the president, vice president and the cabinet. The cabinet is picked by the president and that person is the leader of the U.S. The country needed a leader because the states were becoming countries. “So long as any individual state has power to defeat the measures of the other twelve,” (Noah Webster). During the articles of confederation the states had most of the power and they all wanted to be the strongest state so they became enemies rather than allies.
