This week we were assigned to read to different articles. The first article was written by Peggy McIntosh titled, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”. Throughout the article, Peggy showed the readers what it means to have white privilege. She showed the readers 50 different types of “advantages” that whites get over other races, such as African Americans. This is the biggest theme throughout her entire piece.
The main idea of this entry is about the stereotypes that come along with racism. Also, Brent Staples wants his readers to realize how much colored people sacrifice from their normality in order to fit in with society, in hopes of not being attacked or offended. The author proves this in his entry by mentioning ‘innocent’ behaviors, such as singing Beethoven, that he did in public in order to relief those surrounding him from danger. Moreover, the author compared hikers to the country’s bears in order to provide readers with a valid connection between black and colored people. In addition to that, Brent Staples uses flashback as one of his techniques when sharing with us his encounters with white people, this gives readers an idea of how
The two stories illustrate that African-Americans are not given an equal chance in terms of gaining opportunities for a successful life. However, it may be possible that one key factor among all can develop a whole problematic image on success and why White Americans think of the African-American society as to not having the capability for a chance towards success. At the time, the economy could have been at a huge disadvantage for the African-Americans because majority of them did not have the chance to rise up from it in terms of creating revenue for themselves. The whole world around them built this image and it is hard to come out of when no one can give opportunities for them to improve and grow. Harlon L. Dalton expresses how unfair the
Tatum uses the conflict theory to look at racism, economic and social inequalities. The power structure of the white dominant society in the United States, does not often recognize white privilege, while others do not believe this is a privilege at all. They believe that the power structure in the United States is one that if you work hard, everyone will have the same opportunity for success. This is an example of how white privilege helps racism to continue to exist. The inability to recognize white privilege helps to creates perception and ideals that racism in our society is a thing of the past.
The section of “White Woman, Black Man” further delves into his views of white women and the role that society has in shaping gender relations between black men and white women and also in influencing masculinity and femininity.
As the elections get closer, Nevada's liberal candidate's ads are getting more and more agressive(attacking). In order to understand the mechanics of the campaign materials, I will use PBS " The savvy Voter: dissect an ad" structure. At first, the ad begins by showing a live prop( a senior) in conditions of dissadvantage- the same is being scamed over the phone( which is something quite viral amongst senior conversation talks recently). The lighting is a bit shaded and the individual is presented as voulnerable. At the background we can see how a "trickster" type of music is being played, whilst the senior is represented as a target, using a video-editing technique.
At the first glance the article is about a woman who reminisces about her childhood though the love of Twinkies, she is now grown and understands the truth about Twinkies and how unhealthy they are but still longs for the “snack cake” as her guilty pleasure. The meaning of the Twinkie changes and evolves though out the article and can be interpreted to represent multiple things. While labor issues were a factor in Hostesses bankruptcy, some of the blame can be placed on the migration of people leaning towards heathier options of food. Nguyen encapsulate this concept into a metaphor for the expansion of tolerance and open mindedness in the US now creating a heathier society. Even though the society she lives in now is ‘heathier’ she still reminisces about the Twinkie days where she could digest Twinkies (American culture) without worrying about its effect on her health (mind).
This fictional short story had a powerful meaning because it focused on how racial stereotyping can cause a lot of problems even among young girls who were attending a Girl Scouts camp. “Brownies” also showed how stereotyping can actually be harmful and can sometimes lead to hurtful consequences for the person who is the victim of it and for the person is guilty of stereotyping someone. I decided to do my analysis of this short story using the historical context element because of the long history of problems between the Black and White races in this country according to our history books, including one terrible incident that just happened one week ago when nine innocent Black people were murdered in a church in Charleston South Carolina by a 21 year old White racist who was guilty of stereotyping and hating Black people. The killer accused Black men of raping White women and that Black people were taking over the whole country. These were stereotypes that he first thought about in his head that then led to his terrible actions.
The Americans were not able to distinguish between the Japs and the Chinese, so they relied on the Life Magazine. The magazine addressed the concerns with the comparison of the facial features, ironically, the face of one man can’t represent the entire race. The comparison of the facial features also reveals the racist stereotypes. The magazine described the Chinese people as having “longer, narrower face”, “more frequent epicanthic fold” and “higher bridge” (How to Tell Japs 81). On the other hand, it claimed that Japanese people have a “broader, shorter face”, “less frequent epicanthic fold” and “flatter nose” (How to Tell Japs 81).
“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become reality… I believe that the unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” - Martin Luther King Jr. Grace Hsiang in “FOBs” vs. “Twinkies” demonstrates the interracial issues happening in the Asian culture. Hsiang displays the interracial matter with the Asian culture and its complexity to embrace all sides of the community. She chooses diction in her writing such as discriminated, marginalized, pressure, and dichotomy to project the tone of her writing. While the article Black Men in Public Places illustrates the stereotypes and intraracial issues within the black men community.
The decision to attend a white school is a tough one and Junior understands that for him to survive and to ensure that his background does not stop him from attaining his dreams; he must battle the stereotypes regardless of the consequences. In this light, race and stereotypes only makes junior stronger in the end as evident on how he struggles to override the race and stereotypical expectations from his time at the reservation to his time at Rearden. How race and stereotypes made
Race is one the most sensitive and controversial topics of our time. As kids, we were taught that racism has gotten better as times has passed. However, the author, Michelle Alexander, of The New Jim Crow proposes the argument that racism has not gotten better, but the form of racism that we known in textbooks is not the racism we experience today. Michelle Alexander has countless amounts of plausible arguments, but she has failed to be a credible author, since she doesn’t give enough citations or evidence for her argument to convince people who may not have prior agreement with her agreement.. Alexander’s biggest mistake when it came to being a credible author was starting off the book with a countless number of claims without any evidence in her Introduction.
Many of the differences are purely imaginary because of how others perceptions of whites have rubbed off on them “Man, did you smell them?" (pg. ) These imaginary ideas stem from racial prejudice and the hostility history and current segregation at their time had pushed into their
Throughout his essay, Staples is able to make the audience understand what he has to deal with as a black man. Staples does this by using words and phrases such as, “...her flight made me feel like an accomplice in tyranny” and “... I was indistinguishable from the muggers who occasionally seeped into the area…” (542). By writing and describing how he (Staples) feels, the audience is able to get an inside look into how black men are treated and better understand why society’s teachings, play a vital role in how we see each other. Staples’ powerful writing also allows the reader to take a step back and see how as a society, people make judgements on others based on appearance alone.
