Booker T Washington. Booker T Washington and Frederick Douglass were both slaves in different time periods. Being slaves form birth is something Booker T Washington and Frederick Douglass have in common, but they also have plenty of differences such as they struggled through their hardships differently, they acquired their education differently, and they gained their freedom differently. He also saw someone else?s slave named Demby get shot through his skull, he also witnessed his brother getting stepped on till the blood gushed out of his nose and ears. Frederick Douglass was a slave for 20 years and saw many acts of violence and cruelty. Although Washington and Douglass had different experiences as slaves, they each were influenced by that time in their lives to make a difference. Education was very important to both men. Booker T Washington was formally educated at the Hampton institute. He learned many things at the Hampton institute Such as the importance of taking a bath, and the importance of the Bible. The lessons that Washington learned at the institute were used throughout his life. Frederick Douglass was self-taught the only time he was not self-taught was when Mrs. Auld taught him. When he taught himself, he used the neighborhood boys and he would practice his writing on a wall. Douglass is recognized as the man he is today because of the things he learned from those boys.
