The average human experience revolves around relationships. Relationships with others, ourselves, God, money, and many other objects and ideas that develop and relate to being human. It could be said that one of the most important kinds of relationships is friendship as an individual can find comfort and confidence in another person that they are not bound to by blood and thus forced to care about said person. Relationships formed by similarity and choices are arguably the best and strongest of any sort of relationship out there and add innumerable amounts of meaning and energy to life. Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption explain the importance of relationships in relation to being human. Though this view isn’t as objective as perhaps a third person, nameless narrator could be, it shows off the many relationships that Red has in prison and how each person has touched his life, whether in a positive or negative way. Through Red’s eyes, the reader gets to experience the realness of the characters and in a way also develops a similar relationship to the characters that mirrors Red’s. An example is how in the movie smaller characters like Tommy Williams are given a story that Red gets to experience and interpret, thus allowing for the audience to see this as well and create their own relationship to the more human side of the character that might not have been seen if not for the intervention of Red. This feat gives the novella and movie even more depth and creates an invested audience.
