The National Hockey League (NHL) and the American Hockey League (AHL) are two of the most well-known hockey leagues in the United States and Canada. The AHL feeds players to the NHL when they are needed, and can send players back down to the AHL. In comparing and contrasting the subjects of the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, it is clear that while the National Hockey League is very entertaining and has "die-hard" fans, the American Hockey League is superior because it is more family-oriented, the nature of the game is more competitive because the players are incredibly passionate, and the rules become more clearly enforced. The National Hockey League is set up similarly to the American Hockey League, but with a few exceptions. The NHL is made up of 30 franchised teams, with 24 of them being in the United States and 6 being from Canada. The American Hockey League is made up of 30 teams, all privately owned and located in the United States. The NHL is made up of two conferences (Eastern and Western), divided into four divisions (Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific). The AHL is also made up of the Eastern and Western conferences, but have different names for the four divisions (Atlantic, North, Central, and Pacific). When teams from the National Hockey League travel, they are given first-class treatment throughout the whole trip. From their own plane, to five-star hotels and means, they are surely treated like royalty. When an American Hockey League team travels for a game, it is almost the exact opposite. The team usually drives a charter bus, flies commercial, and stays in a typical hotel, if necessary. AHL teams typically leave for home the same night as the game, but occasionally spend the night.
