Rodjanae Joseph Ms Mosley English II H 11-14-17 Isolation vs Loneliness When a person is lonely that person is feeling deprived of support or comfort, but when isolated they’re choosing to be alone and away from people. Loneliness and isolation are caused by social barriers. Some social barriers are the differences in gender, race, ethnicity and religion. People that are different, or do not fit in will be affected by social barriers. Society can’t decide if a person will be isolated, but it can decide if a person will be lonely. Being isolated is better than being lonely, because a person can want to be isolated. Isolation gives one time to unwind, improve concentration, increase productivity and focus on themselves. Social barriers won’t affect people who decide to be alone because they will not care about what society thinks and may find comfort in something else. In the article, “The Virtues of Isolation” Crane states that “ For the first time in a long while he felt free from the incessant anxieties of daily life: “At last I had time to have time.” He is rejoicing over spending time alone. …show more content…
Loneliness has to deal with a person’s emotions and feelings. If someone feels lonely they are feeling like an outcast and desolated. The feeling of being alone makes one vulnerable to their inner crisis and can lead to depression. Lonely people lack social skills, companionship with others, support and the ability to vent. According to Perry in the article, “Loneliness is killing us, we must start treating this disease,” The biggest disease today is not leprosy or cancer or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted, uncared for by others.
