LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan Nowadays, the question that looms over every NBA fan and analyst’s head is, “Who is the greatest of all time? LeBron James or Michael Jordan.” No matter what, they were both incredible athletes who could lead their team.
The sporting goods industry has a long history from the mid- 1800s until the early 1980s. Since then public ownership led to the expansion of footwear and apparel products in an exploding marketplace. This allowed the top 20 firms to have sales of at least $1 billion. (Lipsey, 2006) After 1980s, sports equipment manufacturing is estimated above a $70 billion industry and is continuously growing worldwide (statista.com, 2014). Walking into any sports store, the shelves will be filled with Nike brand and it’s basketball subsidiary Air Jordan sneakers and products. For decades, the Air Jordan brand has came out on top in sales against competitors. But, during its early years, Nike was struggling because their sales were slowly dying. When it comes to athletic apparel, the first company people think of is either Nike or Adidas. Why is this so? Both Nike and Adidas have done an impressive job in marketing their products, with popular spokesperson like Kobe Bryant or Derrick Rose. Nike’s success is attributed to its products contributing to the success of the athletes who purchase them. Nike and Adidas seemed as though they had control on the athletic apparel oligopoly, but recently, Under Armour has become a serious competitor to the two companies.
Air Jordan is another brand that is famous for it's Michael Jordan dunk logo in the All-Star game. Reebok is another well known logo and is also worn by many athletes today. Finally, Adidas are the shoes that never get enough rep for there shoe game even though they are just as good as Nike's because the players who wore them were not widely known for being phenom's like LeBron, Jordan, or Wall. Tim Duncan, Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose and Damian Lillard are four of the big names who wear Adidas today. In order from the best basketball shoe to the okay basketball shoe, in my opinion it would be Nike in 1st, Jordan in 2nd, Adidas in 3rd, and Reebok in 4th.
