Sylvie Lahtinen Mrs. Novak English 1 Period 7 February 3, 2023 The Nurse and Lady Capulet William Shakespeare’s play titled The Tragedy Romeo and Juliet has countless characters with unique personalities. Every character opposes in some way. However; Lady Capulet and the Nurse stick out with their clear differences. Lady Capulet and the Nurse contradict in many ways. Lady Capulet is far less involved with Juliet’s life as the Nurse. Lady Capulet prioritizes her social status over caring for her daughter. Spending more time away on vacations and attending social events were her top priorities. She is not even aware of Juliet’s age. Lady Capulet says, “She’s not fourteen” (ROM,1.12). However, Juliet is in fact fourteen, and Lady Capulet is oblivious to her own daughter’s age. After Romeo and Juliet get married and decide it’s best to keep it a secret, Lady Capulet almost walks into the room when Romeo is present. She raised Juliet since she was an infant, and has connected with her throughout her whole life. She’s made a connection with Juliet that Lady Capulet, her own mother, never had with her. The Nurse supported and helped Juliet through her marriage to Romeo. She is fully committed to making Juliet feel cheerful with her marriage. The Nurse says, “This afternoon, sir? Well, she shall be there” (ROM, 2.4.174). The Nurse put herself into the situation knowing fully well it could be a blunder. When the Nurse was behind schedule for her return, Juliet panicked. However; when the Nurse returned she had good news. The Nurse says, “Then hie you hence to Friar Lawrence’ cell; There stays a husband to make you a wife” (ROM, 2.5.68-69).
