I believe Odysseus is not a hero because he let many people die. He also didn't save his men from the Cyclops “He couldn't save his people.” I personally think that he didn’t try to save them at all. Odysseus did not save his people in time. According to Homer, “ While he fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home.
The new Marvel Movie, Black Panther, just hit the market and everyone is raving about it already. Odysseus from Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey, shares many characteristics with the Black Panther. In the Odyssey by homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, the Cyclops encounter is one of Odysseus’ greatest flaws and successes at the same time. It began to go downhill when Odysseus lies about his name and the condition of his ship. When him and his men are captured by the cyclops Odysseus claims his name is nobody, and his ship was wrecked, he does this to aid his escape plan and as a tactic to guard his name and men. When the escape plan is put into play, Odysseus stabs the cyclops in the eye with a red hot spear all the while him lying about his name was put into use because the cyclops yells, in agonizing pain, nobody stabbed him in the eye, this causes the other cyclops to lower there guard and not go to assist their brethren. Odysseus uses his knowledge to outsmart others, especially when he defeats the Cyclopes. With twelve of his strongest soldiers, Odysseus risks the lives of many when he encounters the Cyclopes. “‘Here, Cyclops, try this wine--to top off the banquet of human flesh you’ve bolted down.” (388-389, 222).
A good leader should respect the people they’re working with, take ownership of their mistakes, and be trustworthy. Odysseus didn’t show most of these traits, Odysseus didn’t care about his crew as much as he should have. Percy Jackson showed great respect to his crew, he was close friends with the people he was working with which made it easier for them to get along and complete tasks together. Odysseus’ men betrayed him when they opened the bag of wind that blew them back home, if Odysseus had a good relationship with his crewmates, that wouldn’t have happened. Odysseus shouldn’t have treated his men the way that he did, Percy Jackson is a better leader than Odysseus in many ways.
Odysseus was constantly full of himself and boasting, taking ideas that he got directly from the gods and not thanking them, then going around and blaming every little thing that goes wrong on the gods. It’s not as if this only happened once or twice and Odysseus immediately got down on his hands and knees to beg for forgiveness, it kept on happening time on time again, and he didn’t have a clue in his mind that It might be the reason that his men keep on getting magically killed. When his curiosity lead him to the Cyclopes island and into Polyphemus’ cave, it was actually Athena that saved him and his crew. She put a felled olive tree inside of Polyphemus’ cave, letting Odysseus to be able to get a major hint from the gods on what to do next. However, when it came time for him to boast about it, he yelled: “‘Cyclops,/if ever a mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him/Odysseus…, took your eye” (416-419)
Menelaus and Agamemnon are an example of men who taker power for granted. The two royal sons took advantage of the situation especially, since they detested Ajax for innumerable reasons. Apart from being someone who clearly took no one’s orders, Ajax was also in love with Menelaus wife. “Ajax did not join the expedition / because that woman was a wife of yours” (ll. 1333-34). With this in mind, they never could defeat him.
The plan was executed perfectly allowing Odysseus and his men to move past safely out of the Cyclops’ cave. Odysseus also showed how smart he was when the Cyclops asked for Odysseus’s name. He said his name was Norman in order to not reveal his true identity in case there was a future incident with another Cyclops. Looking back to when the Cyclops was getting his eye poked out, another Cyclops was summoned due to the loud shouts from the first one. This showed how clever it was that Odysseus did not reveal his real name because then both Cyclops would
