In both of the texts “Paul Revere's Ride,” and “Paul Revere’s Account of His Ride,” Paul looks for a sign from lanterns. If the British were coming by land, one lantern would be lit. If they were coming by sea then two lanterns would be lit. In “Paul Revere’s Ride,” the text states, “He said to his friend, “If the British march/ By land or by sea from the town to-night/ Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry-arch/ Of the North-Church-tower, as a signal light,/ One if by land, and two if by sea” (Longfellow, Line(s) 6-9). This shows that Paul Revere told his friend to tell him how the British were coming by lanterns. Similarly, in the text “Paul Revere’s Account of His Ride,” Paul states, “I returned at night
