Summative Essay: The Psychology of Love The play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare has two unique characters both in times of crisis. Romeo and Juliet are star crossed lovers and many people believe they are truly in love. Both Romeo and Juliet are desperate for a reason to leave their families and throw it all away. The relationship they share is very complex and has resulted from many things other than love. In their lives Romeo and Juliet are in a sort of mid-life crisis. Romeo is "in love" with Rosaline, but when he meets Juliet Rosaline is suddenly nothing to him. Which draws the question of Romeo's emotional stability. In the text Romeo states in act 1 scene 5 "Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night". This is before he even talks to Juliet and he starts questioning if he had even loved until now. In act 1 scene 5 Juliet says "My only love, sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me, That I must love a loathed enemy". She talks about that Romeo is the one she loves most but the worst person she can fall in love with. The fact that their love is not allowed seemingly makes them love each other more. In psychology if you can't have something you are going to want it even more. The Capulet's and Montague's are such sworn enemies that Tybalt wanted to kill Romeo during the party for even talking to Juliet. Tybalt says during the party " This, by his voice should be a Montague. Fetch me my rapier, boy." He thinks hears a Montague and is ready to draw his sword.
