Anti Federalists were the people that kept individual rights still today. They did not like the Constitution and wanted all the power to be held within the states. The anti federalists felt that a strong national government threatened people and state’s rights. Federalists opposed the Articles of Confederation, they wanted a strong national government under the Constitution. The people thought the Constitution needed to be ratified, by adding the Bill of Rights to protect people’s rights and freedoms. The Bill of Rights is still used today, and it is added because of the Antifederalists to show a fear of a strong national government, a desire for limited government, and the need for protecting basic freedoms. The eighth amendment shows how to limit the power of the government by having no harsh punishments and excessive bails. The amendment explains, “Excessive bail shall not be required… nor cruel and unusual punishments.” This shows that limiting the government gave people to not have punishments or bails that are excessive. This was added by the Anti federalists because it protects people’s freedoms but also limits the power of government unlike Great Britain when they controlled. The second amendment shows how people have the right to carry and bear arms at any time. The second amendment shows, “The right of the people to keep and bear arms.” This shows that Anti Federalists wanted to protect themselves by having this right. This also limits the power to the government because the people feared of another king and didn’t want to government to get in control too much.
