The formation of American political parties was bound to happen despite the founding father’s wishes. This is due to the Constitution being written in such a way that pleased both Federalists and Anti-Federalists, allowing room for different interpretations.. These differences in viewpoints can be seen in each group’s various ideas about the role and strength of government in the new nation, and can be attested to distribution of economic power, specific needs based on the geographic concentration of each party, and their views on foreign policy. The fundamental reason for the beginning of political parties was disagreement regarding the strength of the national government, as well as control of the economy. Meanwhile, the Democratic-Republicans supported the Tenth Amendment of the Bill of Rights, which gives all powers not explicitly prescribed to the federal government in the Constitution to the states. The Federalists wanted more power to the central government, while the Democratic-Republicans tried to avoid this. An example of the differences can be seen with the formation of the national bank. Alexander Hamilton, a federalist, believed that the creation of the national bank under the federal government was Constitutional and that it was the government’s duty to control the economy. Meanwhile, Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic-Republican, argued that the national bank was unconstitutional, as it is not the government’s job to directly regulate commerce.
