Within this paper I will examine my personal assumptions, beliefs and values of the four nursing paradigms to develop a personal philosophy of nursing. The first concept of the nursing metaparadigm is nursing. My philosophy of nursing recognizes the important role the nurse has to deliver care. It is the therapeutic and mutual relationship between nurse and patient that is “the foundation of nursing practice” (End of life, 2016, p. 4). Nurses must understand how they affect patients because every interaction a nurse has with a patient has an impact on their care.
In my preliminary philosophy of nursing I will articulate my beliefs, assumptions, and values related to the four metaparadigm concepts: nursing, health, person, and environment. First I will discuss the nursing aspect of the metaparadigm. I believe that nursing is a collaborative process of healing, advocacy, health promotion, and education. Nurses are the main advocates for patients because they spend the most amount of time with them and are most familiar with their health status/case. An assumption that I take for granted as true is that nursing professionals have one of the biggest impacts in the health of patients.

Philosophy of Nursing Introduction Nursing is a discipline that is guided by philosophical orientations that create a base for the development of nursing theories that translate into clinical practice. McEwen and Wills (2014) state, “rather than focus on solving problems or answering questions related to that discipline, the philosophy of a discipline studies the concepts that structure the thought process of that discipline with the intent of recognizing and revealing foundations and presuppositions” (p. 6). Nursing philosophy embodies knowledge acquisition and cultivates professionalism within the profession. Through philosophy, nurses have gained knowledge and have discovered the true value of nursing practice.
Maville and Huerta (2013) state that Fawcett’s metaparadigm is often used to define and delineate the scope of nursing. Masters stated the purpose of one’s personal philosophy is to define how he or she finds truth. As a result each individual philosophy purported will be unique. Philosophy of Nursing Everyone’s values and beliefs about the profession of nursing are all different.
