The American Nurses Association's definition addresses the metaparadigm theories of nursing because it touches on each of the factors. The nursing theory metaparadigm includes persons, environment, health/illnesses,
Theoretical thinking is essential to nursing and helps guide nursing practice. Theory is defined as “the creation of relationships among two or more concepts to form a specific view of a phenomenon” (Higgins & Moore, 2012, p. 282 para. 2). It is made up of four theories, which include meta-theory, grand theory, middle range theory, and micro theory.
The first concept of the nursing metaparadigm is nursing. My philosophy of nursing recognizes the important role the nurse has to deliver care. It is the therapeutic and mutual relationship between nurse and patient that is “the foundation of nursing practice” (End of life, 2016, p. 4). Nurses must understand how they affect patients because every interaction a nurse has with a patient has an impact on their care.
Nursing practice requires both critical thinking and clinical reasoning. Critical thinking is the process of deliberate higher level thinking to define a patient’s problem, examine the evidence-based practice in caring for the patient’s, and make options in the delivery of optimal care. Critical thinking involves the demarcation of statements of fact, judgment, and opinion. The progression of critical thinking requires the nurse to think imaginatively, use reflection, and engage in logical thinking (Alfaro-LeFevre, 2013). Critical thinking is a vital skill needed for the recognition of patient’s problems and the execution of interventions to endorse effectual care outcomes (Bittencourt & Crossetti, 2012).
Maville and Huerta (2013) state that Fawcett’s metaparadigm is often used to define and delineate the scope of nursing. Masters stated the purpose of one’s personal philosophy is to define how he or she finds truth. As a result each individual philosophy purported will be unique. This paper will seek to define, describe and explain my thoughts, feelings and belief regarding the four concepts of nursing metaparadigm and their interrelationship as well as their influence on my current nursing practice. Masters (2017) states that our philosophy is derived from a process of lifelong learning which allows us to find the truth.
Nursing Metaparadigm Alligood (2014b) explains metaparadigms in nursing knowledge are human beings, environment, health, and nursing (p. 42). These perceptions are exemplified in each philosophy and conceptual model (Alligood, 2014b, p. 42). Nursing Philosophy The practice of nursing evolves daily from
Any given ward or healthcare environment may choose to implement a nursing model to guide its practice and philosophy. The theoretical framework of Orem’s model can aid knowledge based practice (Anonymous, 2010). As the model encompasses all aspects of the nursing process and acknowledges deficits that are not only a problem at ward level , but for the person post discharges , it is helpful in delivery quality, holistic, care from admission to discharge, allowing for discharge planning. Due to this approach we can derive that the model is beneficial to delivering care at all
Nursing Metaparadigm The metaparadigms in nursing knowledge are human beings, environment, health, and nursing. Nursing Philosophy
Giving care to a patient is not a straightforward process because a patient is made up of advanced systems. Symptoms and the severity of a disease process are dependent on a particular patient, and it may not always be uniform from patient to patient. Because of this, nurses must be able to use their knowledge appropriately to help a patient. Nurses use techniques, such as Evidence Based Practice, in order to integrate new and advanced knowledge into their patient care (Canada, 2016). By exercising evidence based practice, nurses effectively seek knowledge, take experience from past situations, and apply this intelligence to best give patient care (Canada, 2016).
Philosophy of Nursing Everyone’s values and beliefs about the profession of nursing are all different. The four concepts of nursing are interrelated and all mean something different to every person, too. Throughout this paper, I will be reflecting on my values and beliefs about nursing through the four concepts while comparing them to a nursing theorist with views that are most similar to my own.
Nursing is concerned with all the variables affecting a patient‘s response to stress, which is interpersonal, intrapersonal and extrapersonal in nature. The concepts of the metaparadigm of nursing under the Betty Neuman system model aim towards the development of a person in a state of wellness having the capacity to function well by adapting the patient’s self to the environment. The theory focuses on the concept of the whole person as an open system.
Nursing Theorists and their Theory 1.Florence Nightingale- Nightingale’s theory of the Environment is mainly focused on the environment, she believed that, the environment has a great importance that can be used to improve and encourage healing. With proper ventilation, clean air, lack of noise , proper lighting, and adequate elimination of waste. Are a few factors she believed and can be observed and maintained. 2.Sister Calista Roy- Roy’s Theory is based on, in which the individual views biopsychosocial being, in which a person adapt with the constant change of the environment.
Now nurses have many roles, such as care takers, decision makers, advocates and teachers and they often assume several roles at the same time. Because of the diversity of nursing role nurses need a philosophy of nursing to guide their practice. The practice of nursing is the care of patients through a professional interpersonal relationship. Nurses apply behavioural scientific principles, biologic scientific principles, and principles of humanism in a
According to people/superiors, nurses can use the right substantive arguments on behalf of a patient’s interests or needs. They accept that this expertise is important for patients because it is related to the quality of
This tends to include views on person, health, and environment to create a perspective of nursing. Therefore nurse can manipulate the environment, so nature is able to restore patient’s health. This theory is broad in scope and complex, which requires further classification through research to be applicable in nursing practice. It provides structural frame work for the general objectives, philosophies about nursing. Nightingale used nursing process to obtain data to save life, increase health and comfort.
